# Saved Spaces: full text

> Where to stay in 8 cities: Tokyo, Kyoto, Sydney, Melbourne, Paris, Barcelona, London and New York. Each city has three ranked editions of eight hotels: Luxury, Boutique and Value. Hotels are chosen from the published record. No hotel can pay to appear. Hosted stays are always labelled.

## How we choose

### Three editions of eight

Every city gets a Luxury, a Boutique and a Value Edition, eight hotels each, ranked. The Value ceiling is set per city and printed on the edition. A hotel joins a full edition only when another leaves. If no hotel meets the bar, the place stays empty.

### The record

Every hotel is chosen from the published record: MICHELIN Guide Keys and listings, the World's 50 Best Hotels, guidebooks, travel and design press, and the hotel's own information. Each hotel page lists its sources.

### Stays

A stay is paid at the public rate unless it is labelled as hosted. Every hosted night is labelled on the hotel's page, with the dates. A hosted night never buys a place. Offers with conditions are declined.

### Money

No hotel can buy a place on a list, and none sees a review before it runs. We carry no hotel advertising. Every booking link goes to the hotel's own website, and we take no commission on it.

### Photographs

A hotel page carries a photograph only when we took it. We use no press images and no AI imagery.

### Changes

Lists move with the record: openings, awards, renovations and closures. A hotel can leave a list. The date on each edition shows when it last changed.

### Who it is for

Anyone who wants a short answer to where to stay. Twenty-four hotels we would send a friend to, sorted by what the friend wants to spend.

## Hosted stays

We ask for one hosted night, room only or with breakfast, on a date that suits the hotel. Every hosted night is labelled on the hotel's page, with the dates. A hosted night does not guarantee a place or coverage. We decline offers with conditions.

   Kerry Hill's atrium, a washi lantern the full height of the hotel.

   An independent Japanese grand hotel on the Imperial Palace moat.
   Rebuilt in 2012, with rooms over the Wadakura moat and the palace gardens.

3. **Hoshinoya Tokyo** (星のや東京)
   A full ryokan, seventeen storeys high, among Otemachi's office blocks.
   Rie Azuma designed the tower, and Hoshino Resorts runs it. Shoes come off at the door, and there is a hot-spring bath on the roof.

   Kenzo Tange's tower, reopened after its first closure in thirty years.
   Floors 39 to 52 of Shinjuku Park Tower reopened in December 2025 after a 19-month renovation, the most extensive in the hotel's history.

   Ninety-eight rooms above the Shinkansen platforms at Tokyo Station.
   Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel designed the interiors, on the upper floors of Tokyo Midtown Yaesu.

6. **Janu Tokyo** (ジャヌ東京)
   Aman's first Janu hotel, opened in 2024 inside Azabudai Hills.
   Denniston did the interiors. The 4,000 m² wellness floor is among the largest hotel wellness centres in the city.

7. **The Okura Tokyo**
   A rebuilt Toranomon hotel with its 1962 lobby recreated.
   In the Heritage Wing, Yoshio Taniguchi recreated the 1962 lobby designed under his father, Yoshiro Taniguchi. The hotel was rebuilt in 2019 and is Japanese-operated.

   Jean-Michel Gathy's 190 rooms above the Imperial Palace gardens.
   Otemachi One's upper floors hold the hotel, with interiors by Denniston. Its pool and bar face the palace grounds.

   Twenty rooms and four bars in a 1923 bank annex.
   Swedish studio Claesson Koivisto Rune renovated the former Daiichi Bank annex in Kabutocho, the old financial district. Its independent food and drink includes a coffee roaster and a beer hall.

2. **TRUNK(HOTEL) Yoyogi Park** (トランクホテル 代々木公園)
   A rooftop pool at the edge of Yoyogi Park.
   Norm Architects worked with Keiji Ashizawa Design on the 25 rooms. The hotel is Japanese-operated and independent of the chains.

3. **TRUNK(HOTEL) Cat Street** (トランクホテル キャットストリート)
   The first TRUNK, fifteen rooms with a lobby the neighbourhood uses.
   Opened in 2017, it started Tokyo's 'socialising' boutique wave. A lobby bar and a wedding chapel share the building with the rooms off Cat Street.

4. **Yuen Bettei Daita** (由縄別邸 代田)
   An onsen ryokan with a garden, ten minutes from Shimokitazawa.
   Hot-spring water comes by truck from Hakone. UDS runs the 35 rooms and a tea salon in a residential corner of Setagaya.

5. **TOMI. Ginza**
   Eight suites, one per floor, in a former Shintomicho hostel.
   Keiji Ashizawa Design converted the narrow building, and each suite is self-contained.

   Thirty-four rooms in Ginza 1-chome, each with its own hot-spring bath.
   KPG opened this ryokan-style hotel in November 2025, a few streets from the Ginza flagships.

7. **The Aoyama Grand Hotel**
   Forty-two rooms on the old Bell Commons site, with a rooftop bar.
   Plan·Do·See, the company behind many Tokyo restaurants and venues, runs it. The interiors are mid-century.

8. **Gajoen Tokyo** (雅叙園東京)
   Sixty suites beside the 1935 Hyakudan Kaidan, the 'hundred-step staircase'.
   The site dates to 1928, and the Showa-era decorative interiors of the Hyakudan Kaidan are next door. It was rebranded under LXR in 2026.

   Five rooms, with Yanaka's bathhouse and bicycles as the lobby.
   The architects behind HAGISO run it. Guests bathe at the local sento, eat in the neighbourhood and borrow bicycles to get around.

2. **SOIL Nihonbashi Hotel**
   Fourteen rooms over a bakery and bar in Ningyocho.
   Kiyoaki Takeda Architects designed the building, which opened in September 2025. The bakery and the bar take the street level.

3. **Hotel Siro**
   Ten storeys in Ikebukuro, with three design teams on the rooms.
   Mount Fuji Architects Studio is credited with the building, three minutes from Ikebukuro Station. Three separate design teams did the interiors of its 41 rooms.

4. **Hotel 1899 Tokyo** (ホテル1899東京)
   Japanese tea runs through the rooms and the ground-floor restaurant.
   The Ryumeikan family company runs it, and its history goes back to an 1899 ryokan. Tea also turns up in the amenities.

   A converted Sumida warehouse across the river from Asakusa.
   Contemporary art storage and exhibition space share the building with the rooms, and the KAIKA TOKYO AWARD is run on site. It belongs to The Share Hotels.

   Twenty-six rooms in Odenmacho, made with 23 artists and creators.

   A Yanaka family ryokan taking foreign guests since 1949.
   One of the few Tokyo ryokan that cater almost entirely to overseas visitors. There are two Japanese baths, and the family owner is hands-on.

2. **HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO**
   The Mitsui family's 1703 gate, opposite Nijo Castle.
   André Fu did the interiors of this Japanese-owned hotel on the former Mitsui estate. It has a courtyard garden and a natural hot spring.

4. **Tawaraya** (俵屋旅館)
   One family for three centuries, and a first website in 2026.
   Kyoto's oldest surviving ryokan, open for about 320 years. Its 1965 wing is attributed to Junzo Yoshimura.

   Six generations since 1818, and Kawabata wrote here.

   A riverside ryokan in the Arashiyama gorge, reached by boat.

   Seven rooms on Gion's antiques street, run by the owner.
